Pickets, protests and parkways. The intown communities started a 30-ye ar grassroots effort to fight the interstate through intown Atlanta. Their efforts ended by successfully creating Freedom Parkway. There is much to le arn from this multi-neighborhood organizational effort, and it can help bud ding activists take up the mantle and move it forward today. This history p op-up in Inman Park will showcase their efforts with signs, newspaper clipp ings, photographs, t-shirts and many of the original organizers of CAUTION (Coalition Against Unnecessary Thoroughfares in Older Neighborhoods) and Ro ad Busters. In addition to the road fight memorabilia, we’ll have way s to get involved today. Representatives from a diverse group of causes wil l be on hand to answer questions about what they do and how you can volunte er. We’ll also have a panel discussion on Saturday, featuring local p>
activists including former CAUTION leader Cathy Bradshaw and others ye t to be named. This event is an effort to educate our community about our a ctivist roots while encouraging people to get involved in their local commu nities and issues today. The past can lead us toward the future.
The event will be held at the King of Pops building at 337 Elizabeth St. Keep w alking past the Pops window and make a right down the alley. The weekend ev ent will include a kick-off party Friday, February 24th at 6 p.m., and a pa nel discussion on Saturday afternoon. The pop-up concludes Saturday evening . Stop by and enjoy our neighborhood’s history. Details can be found at www.Facebook.com/picketspopup or www.picketsprotestsandparkways.com, and announcements on NextDoor will be forthcoming.
