Homeowner: Larry Wolfberg and Wade Sanner

Since 1908, this hilltop bungalow has retained much of its fundamental structure and many of its original fixtures. As the fifth homeowners, and with their renovation nearly complete, Wade and Larry have worked to preserve the character and charm achieved by the initial craftsman.

The original copper lighting and door hardware still remain in most of the house. The wainscoting in the living room and dining room maintains its period finish thanks to previous owner Inez Dulaney, who saved it from being painted by her husband when they bought the house in 1950.

Most of the current changes appear in the back of the house. The kitchen may not feel updated, but it has all the modern conveniences. The main feature of the kitchen is the retro 1940's stove, with two ovens, two broilers and a chrome center griddle. This appliance was discovered at a shop in southern California where it was refurbished and shipped to Atlanta.

Beyond the kitchen, the original back porch was renovated into a new mud / laundry room, and a new covered porch was added. Next to the mudroom, in what had been servants' quarters, a daybed was built. A side panel lifts up and locks the daybed into place to keep Wade and Larry's dog Izzy off the bed.

The last major change was the addition of a second bathroom in the center of the fifty-foot long hallway. After taking baths for over five years in the original claw-foot tub in the bathroom across the hall, Wade and Larry built a roomy double shower in an unused storage closet.

For almost a century, 1061 has stood as a perfect example of Craftsman architecture. Numerous renovations have incorporated modern conveniences, while maintaining the home's original character and charm.
