As you read this, The Freedom Park Conservancy / CAUTION, Inc. (“FPC”) and PATH Foundation will be in the middle of constructing the north-south Greenway Trail running from the Inman Park MARTA Station (at DeKalb Avenue) to Ponce de Leon Avenue and related landscaping improvements that are being done as part of Phase II of Freedom Park’s development. Feeder trails will connect to many neighborhood streets providing access for everyone near the Park.

DHG, Inc. was the successful bidder for hardscape work. Valleycrest was chosen to complete the landscaping portion of the project. Both hardscapes and landscaping will be completed early next year.

The north-south leg of the Freedom Park Trail will intersect the existing trail at N. Highland Avenue. The southern segment will join the existing trail just south of the Carter Center. Most importantly, the Inman Park MARTA station will be connected to Virginia-Highlands, Poncey Highlands, Candler Park, Druid Hills, and the Inman Park neighborhoods. The Georgia DOT even left space for the trail to cross Ponce de Leon at Freedom Park and continue toward St. Charles Avenue. These neighborhoods will be the first in Atlanta to be connected to rail transit with a multi-use trail.

“As we can begin to see the end of this phase of our work,” says FPC Vice President, Al Caproni, “the Board of FPC has determined that we should evaluate where FPC is as an organization, and where Freedom Park, as an asset for the City and our communities, is today, and, more importantly, how and where we want to go and grow in the future.”

To further this “soul searching” process, the Board of FPC has determined that we will engage in a strategic planning process during October and November designed to determine what long-term path we wish to follow for FPC and the long-term visions for Freedom Park. We would like this process to be as open to comment (use: planning@freedompark.org) and participation as possible. To that end, we are requesting that anyone having an interest in Freedom Park, what the park will be in the future and how its development will be guided and/or influenced over the years contact your neighborhood’s representative to FPC to share any of your issues, concerns, objectives, etc. for Freedom Park and FPC. We thank you in advance for your interest and support of FPC and Freedom Park.
